THE CHRIS BUCKLEY MEMORIAL INTERNSHIP: BACKGROUND

A programme of The Umkhumbane Schools Project

Quoting from Prof Buckley's UKZN obituary, "Chris was a well-known, iconic figure in the international Water and Sanitation field, and touched the lives of so many, both personally and professionally. He was one of those unique people that always managed to inspire everyone with his astonishing general knowledge, and deep understanding of science and engineering. Chris’s compassion, patience and dedication to students and young researchers resulted in the completion of over 100 Masters and PhD graduates, the majority of whom are now well-established professionals in the water and sanitation sector. Each one of them carries a piece of Chris’s passion, determination to solve problems, and his love for life and learning. His charismatic personality, radiant smile and mischievous sense of humour will forever be remembered."

The basic parameters of the Chris Buckley Memorial Internship grew out of conversations with Prof Buckley’s widow, Ann Buckley, and follow her desires that the funds be used to uplift disadvantaged young people who could eventually attain the training and exposure to make a meaningful difference in the water/sanitation and management field.  In addition, it was the express wish of Mrs Buckley that the program include a component of direct community outreach, to upskill and inform members of the Cato Manor community alongside and in connection with the studies of promising young leaders in the field who are receiving support.  The Buckley family has chosen this focus on the upliftment of Cato Manor, as the family lived adjacent to this community for many years.  Hence, this program incorporates a unique opportunity for bursary holders to develop leadership skills through a structured programme of community education in a beloved, underserved area under the guidance of The Umkhumbane Schools Project and in a mentoring role with USP secondary schools learners.
